This week’s offering from my list of 100 things stories about me:
#65: I love to read and always have.
My love of books started way back as a very young child when I’d beg my mom to read The Velveteen Rabbit to me every night before bed. This particular book made such an impression on me that I privately began referring to my bedroom as the nursery and sometimes imagined my mom was Nana. Any illness had the romantic potential of becoming a fever. And I knew with the certainty of childhood that all of my toys could become real if only I loved them hard enough.
When I was four my mom taught me to read for myself. Perhaps she was bored of nursery magic? Or, more likely, she wanted to put me on my own path of discovery.
Suddenly, a world of Dick, Spot and Sally opened to me.
Look Mother.
Look. Look.
I can read.
See me read Mother?
Thus began a lifetime of reading. Every week my mom took my brothers and I to the library. I’d comb the shelves for Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and Dorrie the Witch, or a bit later, The Secret Garden and Little Women.
I still love the classics. Jane Austin, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, C. S. Lewis, J. M. Barrie… these are the authors I return to again and again.
Though I have some favorite contemporary authors as well. I tend to prefer children’s and young adult writers like Shannon Hale, Gail Carson-Levine, and Kate DiCamillo. (And yes, J.K. Rolling, too.)
A more recent discovery for me is Stephanie Meyer. I devoured all three of her Twilight Series books in a matter of days. Which is why, when I heard she was coming to Portland to promote her new book, #1 New York Times best seller The Host, I hurriedly bought two tickets. Last night, my dear friend, J-Lyn and I attended the event. We were treated to a far too short question and answer session with Ms. Meyers (and several hundred other fans) before getting our books signed.
And do you know who I thought of?
You.
That’s right, I thought it’s not fair that I get this cool autographed copy of The Host, and my readers don’t.
So I bought an extra.
And I had it signed.
And I’m giving it away to one of you.

For your chance to win leave a comment telling me your favorite book.
Only one entry per person.
Not fair?
Okay…
If you link to me from your blog, you can have an extra entry. Just leave a second comment with the link.
But that’s it, no more!
Contest ends Friday, May 30th at hmmm… let’s say 2:26 pm PST.
Oh, and in order to make sure I still have enough money to buy myself more books, I’ll have to limit entrants to the continental US. Otherwise Mr. Frantic shipping costs will kill me.
And now, I’m off to read my copy…
Good luck!
