See Heidi read. (and a cool giveaway too)

Contest closed. Congratulate the winner here.
This week’s offering from my list of 100 things stories about me:
#65: I love to read and always have.
My love of books started way back as a very young child when I’d beg my mom to read The Velveteen Rabbit to me every night before bed. This particular book made such an impression on me that I privately began referring to my bedroom as the nursery and sometimes imagined my mom was Nana. Any illness had the romantic potential of becoming a fever. And I knew with the certainty of childhood that all of my toys could become real if only I loved them hard enough.

When I was four my mom taught me to read for myself. Perhaps she was bored of nursery magic? Or, more likely, she wanted to put me on my own path of discovery.
Suddenly, a world of Dick, Spot and Sally opened to me.
Look Mother.
Look. Look.
I can read.
See me read Mother?

Thus began a lifetime of reading. Every week my mom took my brothers and I to the library. I’d comb the shelves for Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and Dorrie the Witch, or a bit later, The Secret Garden and Little Women.
I still love the classics. Jane Austin, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, C. S. Lewis, J. M. Barrie… these are the authors I return to again and again.
Though I have some favorite contemporary authors as well. I tend to prefer children’s and young adult writers like Shannon Hale, Gail Carson-Levine, and Kate DiCamillo. (And yes, J.K. Rolling, too.)
A more recent discovery for me is Stephanie Meyer. I devoured all three of her Twilight Series books in a matter of days. Which is why, when I heard she was coming to Portland to promote her new book, #1 New York Times best seller The Host, I hurriedly bought two tickets. Last night, my dear friend, J-Lyn and I attended the event. We were treated to a far too short question and answer session with Ms. Meyers (and several hundred other fans) before getting our books signed.
And do you know who I thought of?
You.
That’s right, I thought it’s not fair that I get this cool autographed copy of The Host, and my readers don’t.
So I bought an extra.
And I had it signed.
And I’m giving it away to one of you.
the host
For your chance to win leave a comment telling me your favorite book.
Only one entry per person.
Not fair?
Okay…
If you link to me from your blog, you can have an extra entry. Just leave a second comment with the link.
But that’s it, no more!
Contest ends Friday, May 30th at hmmm… let’s say 2:26 pm PST.
Oh, and in order to make sure I still have enough money to buy myself more books, I’ll have to limit entrants to the continental US. Otherwise Mr. Frantic shipping costs will kill me.
And now, I’m off to read my copy…
Good luck!

My sister LOVES this author. If I win this book, I’ll read it first, then give it to her:) Hmmm….my favorite book…too many to name…but one that I enjoy reading over and over…”Tangled Web” by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It’s great! Oh and “Rose Daughter” by Robin Mckinley, and all the Tales of Narnia, Harry Potter series…AUGHHHH! Do I have to pick just one?

Wow, how can I resist that offer?
My favorite book is Jane Eyre. Always has been, always will be. I am also a big fan of children’s books and illustrators. Tasha Tudor and Jessie Wilcox Smith, especially.

Sign me up!!! When The fruit roll ups come, and I show some Blog Love Bay-beh, and mention that you are having another give away, I will be back. And yes, technically since I won the other giveaway, I should back off and not participate. But that is technically and I have never dealt well with technicalities.

FUN FUN FUN! Love your blog and giveaways!!

Oh Shoot! Favorite Book. I nearly got counted out based on a technicality.

My favorite is either the Chronicles of Narnia series (I love the movies too) Or Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg. Narnia is sort of a Childrens series and Daisy Fay is about a child. I guess I am kid like myself and that is why I like these in particular.

I have many, many favorite books–my newest favorite is The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. I also read all of the books in the Twlight series in just a few days–my husband was glad when I finally finished them so I would sleep again!

    HOW can I possibly pick just one???? I will vote for the Velveteen Rabbit, and not because you said it. I still have mine from when I was a kid, and my daughter has a beautiful newer copy. I still tear up if we read it together – how big of a dork am I? She loved it too, and a couple of Christmases ago, I got a “real” Velveteen rabbit for her, exactly like the one in the book, and it slept with her every night for at least a whole year, so I’m pretty sure it’s real now. {smile}

I can’t pick just one favorite…..I read obsessively and can never pick a favorite anything. I can only say what I don’t like. I’m weird that way. I too, feel greedy even entering your contest as I was so lucky to have won the fruit roll up one. But I am also NOT that stupid to pass up this opportunity! Thanks!

Oh my goodness my girls would love this!!! We actually already have the book. Syd got it last week and read it in about 5 days! She loves her! She can’t wait until the movie comes out for the Twilight series. So an autographed book would just make her day.

Now my favorite book that I have read, would probably be between Fried Green Tomatos by Fannie Flagg, or The Bridges of Madison County.

my favorite sister in the world let me borrow the Twilight series and i read all 3 in 2 1/12 days. If I won her new book, I would first let my daughter Chelsea read it before she leaves on her mission for our church. She will be gone for 18 months and she too loves Stephanie Meyers.I then would payback my little sister for introducing me to this wonderful author by treating her to a fabulous lunch the next time I see her. my other favorite authors are Patricia Cornwell and Dean Koontz. I like medical mayhem, being a RN and all.

WOW I just found Stephenie Meyer not too long ago and like you DEVOURED the books bam bam bam. I mean I couldn’t get enough and now I can’t wait for the next one in the series. I would love to read this — please please with a hot fudge sundae with it, enter me. Thank you.

My daughter would love for me to win this book! She and I will just have to play rock paper scissors to see who gets to read it first :)

Well, like some of your other readers, I am an omnivorous reader and can’t poss choose just one book! Couldn’t you narrow it down a bit? Like favorite book read (or re-read) within the past month? I recently reread “Gaudy Night” and could say that’s one of my fav Dorothy Sayers’ books. I loved Kite Runner. I love all the Narnia books, although I think Voyage of the Dawn Treader might be my fav. (Or possibly Horse and His Boy) Will this do?
And we enjoy Gail Carlson-Levine and Kate DiCamillo here too.
And my brothers (who are quite a bit older than I) taught me to read when I was 4, too…out of self-defense, I’m pretty sure, because they were tired of reading to me! They taught me to read the Sunday comics, and I still love to read the comics.

My favorite book has been my favorite since third grade. It is the Mixed Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I still want to be those kids locked in the MMA at night. To go exploring all of that history and being allowed to do as you please in a museum! So neat, so exciting, so forbidden. I have recently read it and it never loses its appeal to me!
