An Almost-Spring Break

Change is in the air. I don’t know if it’s that certain slant of February light through my living room window–you know, where it hits the piano, just so? Or if it was the string of days we’ve had this month where there was no rain, that our hens are beginning to lay again, or the return of Girl Scout Cookies–whatever the cause I can feel spring peeking around the corner.

spring chickens

All week this feeling of almost-spring has been giving me a case of almost-spring fever–and I’m not the only one. “What are we doing today and can it please be fun?” has become Newt’s chorus.

On Wednesday my answer was, “Library. I’ll bring my laptop. You bring a friend.” And even though it wasn’t new or exciting, it was enough. That is until I received a text saying that Newt’s friend wasn’t going to be able to make it.

What are we going to do today and can it please be fun?

Suddenly the library wasn’t going to cut it. I made a quick phone call to Walt then told Newt to pack an overnight bag. Twenty minutes later we hit the road for some much needed girl bonding time.

Oregon Coast

Luckily, our favorite little getaway wasn’t booked. We spent the next 24 hours reading, giggling, eating amazing food, and talking about the things that are truly the most important: family, faith, good books, and boys.

Change is in the air for Newt too–she’s growing up so fast. Our little adventure was an opportunity to hit the pause button, if only for a moment. I didn’t know how much I needed that, how much we both did, until we were already there.

The Sylvia Beach Hotel was made for book lovers. Each room is themed around a different author. We stayed in Tolkien and read aloud favorite passages from The Hobbit late into the night. The hotel has no phones, televisions, or even wi-fi, but it has beautiful beach views, a well-stocked third floor library, and even a resident cat. (I forgive it that last one.)

Sylvia Beach Hotel Library

In the morning, after a breakfast that nearly made Newt cry for sheer goodness (hello, oven-glazed pepper bacon) we put on our boots and jackets for a walk on the rainy beach.

Oregon coast

As we stomped our rubber boots in the surf a tiny miracle happened: a floating glass bottle washed ashore.

Messageless Bottle

Though at first we were both disappointed to find that it did not contain a secret message, we brought it home anyway. I think I’ll save it until we return again. I’ll toss it back out to the sea, this time with a message of my own:

Today is all you have. Make it meaningful. Make it fun.

On My Mind: Christmas Eve Edition

one
toy drive santa
Last night, for the third year in a row, we were able to help with the police toy drive. Walt opted to be the police escort instead of donning the Santa suit this year. Newt and I were still Santa’s helpers though. Near the end of our toy delivery route, it started raining. Hard. By the end of the night, we were cold, damp, and very happy. I’m so glad we are able to have our girl be a part of this every year.

Later tonight, we will roast hotdogs (chicken apple sausage for me) and marshmallows in the fireplace and open two gifts each. I suspect (like every other year) they will be new pajamas and books. Tomorrow morning we will have homemade cinnamon rolls and more presents! Later, Walt’s mom will join us for a prime rib dinner and a trip to the movies–Le Mis this year.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy our little low key, happy traditions. Very merry, indeed.

two-point-five
A movie on Christmas Day has been a tradition for Walt and I since our very first Christmas together–when we had been married for a full 15 days. Of course, when Hannah was born, she came along. The first year, she was two months old. We saw Castaway.
The Christmas after Walt’s dad passed away, we invited his mom to join us for Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It was the first movie she had seen in the theater since the premier weekend of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Seriously.

Remember this guy? Baby Elvis in a manger?

I still have him and I smile every time I see him.

I got one gift a little early this month when I sold my SUV and bought a car. I have officially exited young motherhood fully intact. It’s a good feeling.

You have to watch this video made by a friend. Trust me. You won’t regret it.

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays–take your pick. Whatever your choice, know that my family and I wish you and yours the very best.

I love this. That is all.

Under the heading of Social Media:

Since I never post anything of interest on it, I am giving up my Frantically Simple Facebook page. You are all invited to subscribe to my author page instead, if you like. I hope to have good news to share there sometime in the near future.
Sidebar link has been updated to reflect the change.
Also: I have a Tumblr now.

Chalking. Adorable form of self expression and so much nicer than a tattoo to the face.

We use pastel chalks on dry hair. It washes out after one or two washes.

Newt also wears lipstick and mascara now. She is really growing up.
I really like who she is growing up to be.

This happened…

…and it made me very happy. (Don’t grow up too fast, Newt.)

THANKSGIVING!
We will be making this again:
edible Thanksgiving centerpiece

You can make one too!

Or, a fun tablerunner.
Or learn how to cook a turkey.
Or learn how to ruin a turkey. Twice.

five-point-two-five
We don’t have books in the dining room any more, but maybe this is a mistake? Books should live everywhere!

five-point-five
Speaking of Thanksgiving: I’m thankful for you!
Have a lovely holiday.

Guess? Who.

Guess what Newt is going to be for Halloween:

Besides the big night, Newt also has a costume contest for a 4H animal show she’s competing in.
I have an only child. How is it that I am having to make three Halloween costumes? One for a chicken?
Oh how I wish I were kidding.

Sidenote: I just shampooed that rug and it looks terrible again. I thought of trying to edit it out, but there is a nasty rumor going around that I am perfect. Untrue, as you can now clearly see.
Also: I have things currently growing in my fridge that may require a bio-hazard suit to safely dispose of them. And, I didn’t bother to wash my face in the shower this morning.
Take that, rumor-mongers.

Summer Rules 2012

Newt, June 2008

I feel like I am standing at the top of a very steep hill. One step below me is a slick orange slippery-slide. As soon as I get on, the entire summer will whiz by, ending with a splash in September.
We have big plans and a full calendar (most of which belong to Newt): swim team, visiting family, sleep-away camp, theater camp, camping, BBQs, picnics, rodeos, parades, baseball games, and fireworks.
It’s going to be awesome.
To make sure we don’t neglect the important things, Newt and I have created the following:

  • Read, write, and do a little math every day.
  • Don’t neglect the garden.
  • Create a new flavor of homemade ice-cream.
  • Go outside every day, rain or shine.
  • Newt makes dinner at least once a week.
  • Chores before play.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • With exception of Saturday, no tv until after dinner. On Saturday, no tv until after chores.
  • Go someplace new at least twice a month.
  • Have Family Date Night every week.
  • Every time we go the Farmer’s Market, buy something unusual.
  • Always keep money for the ice-cream man.

What are your plans this summer?

A Little Bit of a Fuss

I was feeling downright domestic this week. Besides all the Valentines I helped Newt with, we had a second round of sugar cookie-ing, this batch dipped in dark chocolate. (And can I just tell you? Yum. The buttery lemony cookies went perfectly with that rich dark chocolate. So good.) These we shared with friends: taking a plate to a party and little care packages to seven(!) houses.
And then there was our oh-so lovely Valentine’s evening. Our family invited Grandma over to be our sweetheart for the night. Newt made the salad (her own delicious creation: baby greens, pears, dried cranberries, feta and my maple vinaigrette). Walt made dinner (Fettuccine Alfredo from this recipe, though he accidentally used cilantro instead of parsley – and it was even more wonderful.) And me? Well, since we gave all our cookies away, I made dessert:

This delectable creation is called Boccone Dolce and it is modeled on Walt’s favorite dessert from our favorite restaurant. It is made from layers of chocolate coated Swiss Meringue with fresh fruit and lightly sweetened whipped cream. I used this recipe, with minor modifications (whip the meringue as long as you possibly can. The restaurant whips it for a full hour. I whipped for 15 minutes). I was amazed that it turned out so well. Almost perfect.
After such a rich meal, I was considering passing out Pepto tabs for after dinner mints… Instead, we put on our jammie-pants (except for grandma who did not bring hers) and curled up in the living room with You’ve Got Mail* on DVD.
Lovely.
How was your night?

*Oh, the irony. The movie: People enjoying the novelty of the internet while a big-box book store drives the independent companies out of business. Today’s reality: People enjoying the novelty of independent book stores while the internet drives the big-box stores out of business. Who would have thunk it?

Sugar Cookies That Actually Taste Good

I admit it. I’m prejudiced against sugar cookies.
Surprisingly, it’s not the white flour or white sugar that bothers me. I think there is room in our diet for the occasional treat – and homemade is always better.
It’s not they way they look, for sure. If they are decorated well, they are really cute.
However, I’ve always thought that cuteness was the only thing they had going for them. Flavor wise, they’re too bland and too boring. Beyond that they are messy and super time consuming to make.
Confession: I am also the teeniest bit afraid of trying my hand at icing. It looks hard.
My prejudices aside, we make sugar cookies – every year at Christmas.
Because our flood put me a few weeks behind in Christmas preparations, we didn’t get around to making any this year.
On Sunday, while Walt and Newt were watching the Super Bowl, I looked around online for a sugar-cookie recipe that might be tastier than sawdust. Once I found a promising recipe, I whipped up a batch and stuck it in the fridge.
Last night I surprised Walt and Newt with a family cookie making party.

See what I mean about messy?

I was going for Valentine’s Day cookies, but we ended up with a mishmash of holidays: hearts, bats, birdhouses and stars decorated with red and green sugar. Perhaps everyone was afraid that this would be the one and only sugar cookie making session of the year. They had to get their favorites in.
Want to know something though?
These cookies are actually really good.
They are firm enough to not crumble when dipped in my herbal tea, but still slightly soft. And that buttery taste with just a hint of lemon? Let’s just say, I now have a new outlook on sugar cookies.
I might even try icing them one day…

Bee in Our Bonnet has the recipe I used, as well as fantastic decorating tips and tricks. The only modification I made to the recipe was using about a teaspoon of grated lemon zest instead of the lemon extract.

Christmas List

Done

  • These last felt nativities bring my total up to eight this season. I’ve gotten a bit faster at them, but each set still takes about five hours. I’m looking forward to making something else now.

2011's Needlefelted Nativity #8

Plan To Do

  • I still haven’t started a handmade gift for Newt. I’m thinking of felting her a Princess Leia – if I can bear to pick up my needles and roving one more time before Christmas.
  • I have plans to take Newt out to buy her Dad a gift. I did 99% of my shopping online this year; it should be fun to go on a shopping date with my girl.
  • The turkey that I didn’t cook for Thanksgiving is defrosting in the fridge. We’ve invited Grandma to sleep over on Christmas Eve. After church on Christmas morning, we’ll open our gifts and then I’ll get cooking (the meal, not Grandma).

Not Going To Do (and I don’t feel even a bit of guilt)
I feel like I got a late start this year, so there were some things I just didn’t get around to doing.

  • I didn’t send cards this year, though I do have a letter half written. Maybe I’ll send it for Valentine’s.
  • I didn’t bake a thing, but I’m okay with that. Besides, I think Newt will have all the baking buttoned up for us this week. She’s making cookies at a 4H workshop this afternoon and fudge or peanut-brittle with some friends later in the week.

cookies
I can live with no baby Elvis in the manger this year.

I’m feeling the need to draw inward for a bit. To spend some time at my home and hearth, enjoying my family.
006
Things will likely be quieter around here for the rest of the year. Not completely silent, mind you: I have plans to share a recipe tomorrow and a book review sometime next week, but if I’m not here every day, don’t worry. I’ll just be alternating between lounging around and making merry with my two favorite people:
mustachioed trio
That reminds me of one more thing I didn’t do this year: family photos. This one will have to do. Newt is actually about that tall now anyway, without having to stand on a chair.

Just in case I don’t get around to saying it: I hope that your Christmas (Hanukkah, Kwanza, Solstice and/or Festivus) is very merry and that you are surrounded by those that you love.
I also hope that if you have a chance to wear a fake mustache, you embrace it wholeheartedly.

It's Monday, Let's Talk About my Hair

Are you sick of hearing about my hair yet?
No? ‘K good.
I finally went in to see Mindy, my hairdresser, on Friday. There are three things you must know about our relationship.

  1. I firmly believe with all my heart that Mindy is awesome.
  2. Mindy has been doing my hair for 15 years. Even when I moved 3000 miles away for three years, I still managed to squeeze in a cut and a color when I visited home.
  3. I would never, ever consider going anywhere else. Seriously. Even if it was free. Even if *Vidal Sassoon him(her?)self held the scissors.

Mindy cut Newt’s hair first. She looked over at me while she was cutting and said, “Your hair looks great. What color is that?” I detected a hint of suspicion in her voice. Doesn’t she know the depths of my devotion? She thought I was cheating on her!
I proudly explained that my hair color is au natural, due to no ‘poo. (Remember? Once I stopped using shampoo the color changed?)
Mindy was intrigued. Then she cut my hair (dry cut, so as to not have to mess with shampoo thank-you-very-much). Her verdict? My hair is in awesome condition. It’s strong, smooth, and shiny!
No ‘poo wins! Yay for baking soda!
Here’s a beauty shot of Newt and I (with Walt, who did not get a new haircut) sporting our new ‘dos at the Oktoberfest.
Oktoberfest
Yes, I know it is not October yet. We live in Oregon. It rains here in October. And Septemberfest doesn’t sound cool.
Here are some other random characters we ran into this weekend:
Oktoberfest
I spy a waxed mustache in the wild!

Oktoberfest
What’s German for adorable?  Cüte?

Oktoberfest
And then there was that guy… there are **no words.

Speaking of no words, last week Newt painted this gnome.
Prison Gnome
It’s wearing a prison jumpsuit…

Hope your Monday is full of unexpected surprises.

*I have no idea if Vidal Sassoon is a real person, but with a name like that I certainly hope so. Can’t you just see little Vidal getting ready for the first day of school with his(her?) name stitched in his(her?) coat, holding a Scooby-Doo lunchbox and a box of new pencils?
No?
Maybe it’s just me.
**No good words. There is, however, a really bad pun. Ready for it? Here goes: I wonder if he’s Tongan! Get it? Tong-an uh… nevermind. I should have stuck with no words.

P.S.: Thanks for the lovely comments and emails from Friday’s post. I wasn’t fishing for compliments, but I won’t throw them back!

Linking up with Miss Elaine-ous Monday.

Fair Weather

Well folks, it’s official. I’m sick. I’ve spent the whole day in bed and am using every home remedy I can think of. I had planned to write something brilliant (right), but these pictures of us at the Sate Fair will have to do.

State Fair 2011
That tree-man might just be the creepiest mascot ever.

State Fair 2011
Speaking of creepy, this goat enjoyed petting a bit more than was comfortable to me.

State Fair 2011
Running into rodeo princesses was a highlight of Newt’s life. She would like this blown up to poster size.

Mama, can I keep him?

What could be more all-American than that?

This “ride” was called Walk on Water.

See how the zipper came open there? Newt sank. I guess she just didn’t have enough faith.

And that was the end of that. Good thing we were ready to go anyway.
