Can you believe we drove a straight 3500 miles last month? All the way across America. 3500 miles with no incidents other than a dead battery and a defective cargo carrier.
And then in the last week I’ve been in two car accidents!
Well, one car accident and one car incident.
Yes, just this evening while pulling out of a parking spot at Wal-Mart (oh, how I hate that store!) I failed to notice the woman pulling out behind me. And she failed to notice me. We tapped bumpers. (I’m fine.)
Yes, I was driving the rental car given to me while my car is being repaired. So there’s that added layer of embarrassment and paperwork. Ugh.
As a result, I have decided to retreat back into the relative safety of that 3500 miles and post a bit more about it.
Why? Because you, oh surfers of the internet, have asked for it.
You see, WordPress has this great feature for bloggers: the stat page. On it I can tell how many visitors I am getting each day, what they are reading and how they find me. One of the ways people find this site is by the use of search engines, and my stats page will even tell me what my readers were searching for when they ended up here. It’s pretty cool.
Quite a few people have recently stumbled upon this site by googling something like “drive across America”. I assume those people either are contemplating doing something like that themselves or have just come to shake their heads at my family’s perceived insanity.
If you are in the former group, this post is for you.
In order to escape from my present reality (no, I’m fine, really) I thought I’d take a moment to share some long distance travel tips.

Tip #1: Sit down with your travel companions and make a list of “must-sees”. Unless you plan to be on the road for a very long time, keep it fairly short. I’d suggest 1-2 attractions for every three days.
Tip #2: Map out your route incorporating the must-see destinations. Make a rough timeline, but be flexible. Don’t try to plan every minute. Build extra time into your schedule so you can stop and see The Museum of Medical Oddities (Philadelphia) or The Birthplace of Melvil Dewy (Adams Center, New York) as you see signs for them along the highway.
Tip #3: Speaking of mapping, if you are planning to go off the beaten path at all, I’d highly recommend investing in a GPS tracking system. Unless you like stopping to ask the locals for directions. We did not like it much at all.
Tip #4: Bring lots of distractions, for example:

Movies, books on CD, coloring books, and/or simple craft projects are great for taking little minds off the long, long road ahead. But don’t give them out all at once. Your little travel companions will figuratively devour them within the first 200 miles and then whine about how bored they are. Try giving out one new prize a day.

My dear friend Gina packed a bag for our daughter containing enough envelopes to open one every 100 miles. In each envelope she placed a simple prize. Really simple – like a sticker, a travel brochure with pretty pictures, a scripture quote, a pretty rock. It didn’t really matter what was in the envelope. Just having a little something to look forward to really helped the miles pass by.

I also kept a secret reserve of fun snacks for those times when we needed a little boost. I highly recommend Banana-cream Reeces, if you can find them. (If you do happen to find them, can you tell me where? I can’t get enough of those things, but they are hard to come by.)

Tip #5: Know your limits, and those of your travel companions. Stop well before you need to. And a hotel with a pool after a long day? Heavenly.
Tip #6: Institute this bathroom rule rule: “When one goes, we all go.” Enough said.
Tip #7: Take pictures of everything! Not only will those photos trigger memories of the trip-of-a-lifetime, but they will also make an awesome slide show to entertain that pesky Amway salesman that keeps coming over.
Tip #8: Most importantly, don’t forget to pack your sense of humor. Things will go wrong, but getting angry about it won’t help. And later, you really will laugh about it.

Come to think of it, tip #8 should be followed a closely as possible in every situation.
I’ll try to take my own advice.
Ha ha hee ho.
And now I’m off to call my insurance agent again. Maybe I’d better put him on speed-dial.

PS: If you have any travel related questions, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Mileage: 353
Total mileage: 3048
Today’s time in car: 6 hours 40 minutes
Starting from: Salt Lake City, Utah
Ending in: Boise, Idaho
States visited: Utah, Idaho
Today’s boredom buster: room service
Mood: reminiscent

Today we ended our tour of Mormon history with visits to the Museum of Mormon History and Art and Temple Square.
On our walk to the museum we saw people setting up for an Easter egg hunt in front of the Salt Lake Art Museum. I felt a bit sad that we would be traveling on Easter. I had arranged for the Easter Bunny to pay a visit to our house before we moved. And tomorrow we will attend church. We will also spend some time talking about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Maybe even listen to Handel’s Messiah in the car, but I felt like we would be mostly ignoring the holiday this year.
So I was delighted when a woman with a box full of plastic eggs noticed us and insisted we come join in the hunt. She even went so far as to find a bag for Abby to put her eggs in.
Abby was thrilled.
When we resumed our walk to the Mormon history Museum, Abby was clutching a plastic bag full of Easter cheer.
Thank you, kind lady!
After our brief morning in Salt Lake, we drove north to visit my brother and his family. We enjoyed a couple of hours of good conversation with Bart, his wife Gwen, and their teenage son, Derek who Abby may or may not have developed a crush on.
We left, supplied with Uncrustables, Girl Scout Cookies, Twinkies, Orange soda and plans for a reunion this summer. I’m already looking forward to it.
Before leaving Utah, we stopped by the little house my Grandmother had lived in for all of her adult life (pictured above). I felt as though I could run up to the door and announce “Grandma, we’re here!” like so many times before, but I know the house is empty. Instead I took a few pictures and remembered her.
Then we turned west again and drove on.
Tomorrow: Oregon

We are on day two of our 3000 mile trek back to Oregon.
As we do not intend to drive all the way across the US again, ever, we decided to plan many of our stops around places of historic interest, even if they take us a bit out of the way.
The first part of our journey will be focused on early Mormon history.
I’ll post whenever I can get a good connection. Please don’t expect much out of Wyoming.

Day One: Still Here
Mileage: 6
Time in car: about 20 minutes
Mood: Mixed emotions. Abby and I cried at leaving friends and a place we dearly love. Bob cried because we were crying. (He’s such a loving man.)
But, there was also a sense of adventure and excitement in the air. Bob felt excited for our destination. Me, for the journey. And Abby? Both of those things and all the hotel soaps along the way.
Bob and I underestimated the time it would take to get everything packed into the truck, clean the house, and say our heartfelt goodbyes to friends and neighbors. We had planned to start the first leg of our journey by 5:00 pm at the latest.
Our little family finally waved a tearful goodbye to our empty house at 8:00 pm. (It would have been much later if it had not been for my good friend Gina who came with a small army of helpers fresh with enthusiasm. Thank you all!)
Yet, it was still too late to get farther than the Hilton in the middle of town…

Day Two: Traveling
I forgot to check the trip meter as I got out of the car, so these are approximate:
Mileage: 330
Time in car: 6 hours
Mood: Sleepy
Yesterday’s efforts manifested themselves in my aching back and feet. I amused myself by reading one of the books I brought along for the drive. “The Kite Runner”, in case you were wondering.
Abby watched two movies: Mr. Magorium’s Magic Emporium and Hoodwinked. She also colored and drew pictures. We played one game of twenty questions (answer: a pillow) and then she fell asleep.
Bob just drove.
We arrived in Palmyra, New York earlier this evening.
It was too late to do much more than grab a bite to eat and settle into our hotel for the night.
Neither Abby nor I was thrilled with our dinner at a local diner. I surprised her by suggesting we have this instead. It feels good to be a hero once in awhile…

Minnesota Mom is hosting Flat Stanley Fridays on her blog. Since I love company, I offered to show the little guy some sights around here. The day he arrived in my inbox, Abby and I headed to the library so she could make his acquaintance.
Then on Saturday, the whole family took Stanley out for some fun.

We started our day with a visit to Aji Ichiban in Rockville, Maryland. I had read about it on Candy Blog some time ago and was excited to find one close to me. Although I should have re-read her post before going because for some reason, I was picturing a Japanese candy utopia. What I got was a tiny strip-mall store with a few scant bins of Japanese candy (but no cool, crazy Kit-Kat flavors ) and a bunch of bins of food oddities. And it smelled. Really bad. Like old fish.

Here Stanley is posing in front of a bin of “Mini Roasted Crabs”. I chose not to sample them.
I did, however, sample the preserved ginger. I love crystallized ginger. Just not ginger crystallized with salt.
How do you say “gross” in Japanese?
(Cybele from Candy Blog made a similar mistake. Yet another reason I should have re-read that post!)

From there we headed into DC.
Here is Stanley at the National Cathedral… (I have to say, I am quite proud of this photo!)

…and at the White House.

After which we treated him to dinner.

On the walk back to the car, Flat Stanley went crazy and jumped the White House fence.
He was arrested and is even now in detention. We’ll miss him…

As a matter of national security, his photo has been censored by the US Government.
